The next-generation family business Thomas Funck is setting new trends.

As a member of the “Nahe Sieben” group of winemakers, its main focus is on the quality of the wine and exchanges of views on wine.

A simple structure has been created below the mountain church in Waldböckelheim to provide an appropriate setting in which to present the wines.

Its design and composition were inspired by the vineyard walls that stretch round the mountain church.

The architects have built on this theme by carving out entrance to the wine store as cubic shapes, similar to steps.

The resulting alcove, which leads into the sales room, is accentuated in an intense golden hue.

The material composition, too, is reminiscent of the vineyard walls.

An old brushing technique, the broom finish, was revived for the outer walls.

The rough structure and unobtrusive, rubble-like colouration allows the modern design to blend in with its surroundings.

The wine store stands confidently in front of the local landmark as a visual foundation.
